About your author
I’m your author, Maarten van Emden. Out of high school I obtained commercial and naval flying licences. In university I studied electrical engineering, mathematics, statistics, and finally discovered programming. I held research positions at the Mathematical Centre in Amsterdan, IBM’s T.J. Watson Laboratory and the University of Edinburgh. At the Universities of Waterloo and Victoria in Canada, I have been teaching and doing research in programming. Elements of Programming presents my teaching philosophy: this book introduces first-year students in science and engineering to computer programming.
